Z J At 11 o'clock this morning the wall of the Parsons Drug Co. 's store, a two-story brick structure standing on the public square of this city, crashed with a loud noise and buried a number of men and women teneath1' the -ruins, killing at least three -of them instantly. - The dead are: 5 Little Virginia May Covington, oldest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Covington, Jr,;. Miss Ma rion and Miss Lora Little, young est daughters of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Little, all of Wadesboro. ' 'Mrs. J. M. Covington and her : dawrhter-in-law. Mrs."1 J. M. Ccvington, Jr., and little .Vir ginia It ay, and Mrs." L. D. Rob inson were seated at a table in the coiner of the store, with the - Misses Little when the crash came. When the by-standers realized what "7 had happened, they rushed in regardless of th; ir own lives and succeeded in bring out Mrs Covington and Mrs. Kobmson. ine Jittie girl was ( found pinned beneath the heavy - timbers, dead. No trace of the Misses Little was found until great part of the debris had been removed. During the time men worked like demons - and in an : hour the body of Miss Lora , was - found. It was several hours lat . er before tho body of . Miss Ma rion was loSated and taken from the ruins. - ; ; . . A force of hands were at work ' under the building, making ; ex cavations for the purpose of re modeling the store, . Mr. Dock . Cranford, who has charge of theu, noticed that the walls were tracking and told someone about the store that they were unsafe. Mr. Henry Covington, one of the clerks, had phoned Mr. Erasing- tonjhe contractor, that the.walls had been declared unsafe, be- fore the crc?h c&me. " Mr.-Cran ford had gone out to take i anoth er look, when' he noticed they wete falling.. He cailed to those inside, but it was too late. ' . , All of the employees of the ' store managed to escape through . the closing doors and windows excipt Mr. John Willie Milts. He owas, upstairsnd fell '.in among the ruins, but managed to crawl ,iout with only a few minor bruis es. Nearly, every one of the rnen employed in the store have - their faces cut and bruised but none arejatally injured. -It is a miracle how anyone in the building escaped. Miss Marion "and -Miss Lora Little were among the most pop ular young ladies of the! town. Bright and ; intelligent beyond the ordinary ' and possessed rof unusual beauty. About 60 farmers attended the corn growers' meeting at the courthouse Wednesday of last week conducted by Mr. McLean; district agent, and Mr. Millsaps, Stat Director for North, Carolina of the U. S. Agricultural De partment.' . The lectures on corn growing were " splendid. Soil improve ment, plowing, cultivation, seed selection etc. were discussed quite thoroughly. There were about , ten lots of corn brought in to contest for the priaea to be offered. The successful parties were as fol lows: First prize. $1 for the best five ears, Earle Poole, Troy. Second prize, 50e for second best five ears, F. M. Warner, Troy. Third, or sweep stakes prize $1 for the best ear in the entire ex hibit went to W. F.
